NLC – Civil Rights Sessions: Racism, Prejudice, and Implicit Bias @ A206

Employee Training IconAdjunct Faculty Development LogoThis April, North Lake College students will travel by bus to visit landmarks of the American Civil Rights Movement as part of the college’s second Civil Rights Tour. The trip takes place April 2-5, with stops in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma, Alabama and Jackson, Mississippi. This trip is an opportunity to learn outside the classroom walls — by walking through the scenes of iconic moments in the civil rights struggle, visiting some of our nation’s foremost historical museums and memorials, and studying with instructors who are passionate about American history.

Before the trip begins, a series of associated Civil Rights Tour Seminars will take place on NLC’s Central Campus. These seminars are free and open to all members of the campus community, even if you’re not taking the tour.

Attendees receive 1.0 PDUs

DCCCD – Mental Health First Aid @ H226

Employee Training IconMental Health First Aid USA is a training — like regular First Aid or CPR — designed to give people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to recognize and respond to the warning signs of specific illnesses. Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education is designed with colleges’ and universities’ unique culture and resources in mind. Training students, faculty and others in higher education settings how to recognize the symptoms of emerging mental illnesses or to assist young adults in a mental health crisis can help lessen the severity and impact of mental illnesses.
Mental Health First Aid teaches participants a five-step action plan, ALGEE, to support someone developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis:
 Assess for risk of suicide or harm
 Listen nonjudgmentally
 Give reassurance and information
 Encourage appropriate professional help
 Encourage self-help and other support strategies

They are simply the brain’s way of coping with and categorizing all the information we receive every day; both positive and negative. Our tendency to discriminate against a group of type of person many times may not be intentional, but we can still do something to change it. The more we expose ourselves to understanding ideas, images and words that challenge negative stereotypes, the less discrimination will occur; and project.

NLC – Teaching Squares Program: Round Up @ K322

Adjunct Faculty Development LogoInterested in being a part of Teaching Squares? Here’s your chance! The Teaching Squares program provides advisors, faculty, and adjuncts with an opportunity to gain new insight into teaching through a non-evaluative process of reciprocal classroom observation and self-reflection. As part of this program, you will find a partner that you would be interested in visiting their classroom 3 times during the semester. After you and your partner each complete 3 classroom visits, you will get together for your “Square Share.” This session provides you with an opportunity to meet and discuss class visits with your partner. It is a face-to-face connection with your colleague and a wonderful opportunity to share conversations about teaching and learning.The final meeting date for Teaching Squares will be our Round Up, where we will share what things you learned from the experience.

By completing the full series of sessions in the program, on your IAP. Here are the time commitments for Teaching Squares:

1.5 hours – Opening/Kickoff (Lunch will be provided.)
3 hours – Class Visits: You will visit the class of your fellow square colleague 3 times.
1 hour – Square Share: You will meet to discuss your class visits with your partner
1.5 hours – Round Up (Lunch will be provided.)

Ribas, first-generation student and director of the Parc Asronòmic de Montsec in the Catalonia region of Spain. Dr. Ribas will be spending about an hour with us answering our questions about all things astronomy. Come hear the story of Lavinia Masters, who is the name behind the bill that was recently passed that was aimed at reducing the backlog of untested rape kits across Texas. The Lavinia Masters Act:
*Requires an audit of untested rape kits to determine the number, status, and location of all rape kits in Texas
*Created timelines for the submission, testing and analysis for all newly collected kits
*Prohibits law enforcement agencies from destroying rape kits related to an uncharged or unsolved case until the later of the 1) the length of the statute of limitations or 2) 50 years
*Toll the statute of limitations for sexual assault and aggravated assault until the rape kit is tested
*Increase the time the Texas Department of Public Safety maintains rape kits classified as non-reports from two years to five years.
